I never saw someone with my disability in a book, let alone a romance, so I wrote one. Melody has TAR syndrome, but the book isnโ€™t about overcoming having a disability. Itโ€™s not even about living with one. Itโ€™s just about a young woman living her life, finding love, finding a group of friends who see her, not her disability. And being loved unconditionally. This is a book I hold very close to my heart because itโ€™s one I needed. And itโ€™s always been my hope that anyone who needs a reminder they can be loved and belong for who they are, not their disability, will find this book. Happy disability pride month. Some of us call it pride when not everyone feels good about their disability. And thatโ€™s valid. Not even I feel proud all the time. I was born with short arms. And yeah, thereโ€™s a fancy medical term for it, but thatโ€™s the biggest thing. Short arms, easy bruising, bleeding. Growing up this way wasnโ€™t easy. And I can go on about the childhood trauma I ended up with, but I wonโ€™t. What I will tell you about is how hard it was for me to grow into my own. For years, I hated my arms. Hated myself because the world around me didnโ€™t see past my disability, so naturally neither could I. My entire childhood was spent wanting to be normal, like the other kids, instead of just loving myself for who I was. I donโ€™t know how to tell you how it changed from hating myself. Because there wasnโ€™t a switch. There were just little moments. Taking off my sweater instead of hiding. Having friends who saw me instead of just my arms. Writing my feelings down. Proving everyone and myself wrong about being incapable of doing things. That doesnโ€™t mean I love myself on a constant basis, though. Sometimes having short arms really annoys me. And adding having bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression into the mix? Itโ€™s extremely hard. But no one loves themselves every day.โ€จAnd thatโ€™s okay. You can celebrate Disability Pride Month. Be proud of belonging to the disabled community. Of just existing. Of raising awareness for your disability and others. And you can still dislike or grieve having a disability. Both can be true at the same time. So, happy disability pride month. I hope everyone learns and grows.

Itโ€™s hard, being seen underneath all the layers, that raw being that makes you, you. I never realized how true Everettโ€™s words felt until I started feeling restricted, scared to disappoint. Until I started noticing I was moving for others instead of myself. And it hid under so many actions. I havenโ€™t been on social media much, Iโ€™ve been taking time for me. Itโ€™s so important for everyone to do that. Especially when you start to lose yourself a little. But just like Everett, itโ€™s not bad, letting people see who you are underneath. Because that raw version of you is so special. So beautiful. It deserves to shine and be loved. You deserve to shine and be loved.
